About this event

  • Do you want to increase your understanding of the complex interplay between unmet needs, underlying conditions, and social/systemic factors affecting rangatahi? This session will be led by Pete Thorburn, Director at Meth Education and Solution Services and an AOD clinician.

Join facilitator Pete Thorburn for a unique two-day professional development opportunity, that seeks to equip you with the skills and knowledge required to harness potential for change in young person’s experiencing substance misuse, mental health issues, and offending behaviours.

You will also get an understanding of how to co-create solutions with rangatahi, leveraging their strengths and capabilities to drive their own change.

  • Learn how to use elements of Motivational Interviewing (MI) within a brief intervention approach to reduce risk and empower young people to be the drivers of their own change
  • Understand how incorporating elements of Motivational Interviewing skills, particularly Open-ended questions, Affirmations, Reflective listening, and Summary reflections (OARS) can increase the effectiveness of engagement
  • Gain deeper understanding of the interconnections between unmet needs, underlying conditions, and the social and systemic factors
  • Explore strategies for fostering a sense of agency and ownership in rangatahi, ensuring their voices are heard and respected
