For the evening classes, you will need basic jewellery soldering skills and the ability to use a jewellery saw. You will build on your knowledge through group demonstrations and will have the opportunity to work with the tutor on individual projects and develop a better understanding of jewellery making.
Each term a new skill will be introduced:
Term 1 - Casting using Delft Clay: This is a sand casting process in which metal objects are cast from a mould.
Term 2- Basic stone carving and stone setting: You will learn to use wet diamond grinding tools and how to carve basic stones to set within jewellery.
Term 3 - Chain and brooch making: Silver is generally used for chain making but you are able to purchase other metals such as copper or brass in class. Brooch making teaches you to make the attachments and clasps.
Term 4 - Saw piercing and using the hydraulic press. Learn to use a jewellers saw to cut intricate shapes from sheet metal. You will also be shown how to make 3D lightweight shapes with the hydraulic press.
Please note: In addition to the course fee, please expect to spend $20-$30 on consumables like sawblades and solder.
Jewellery classes on Tuesdays are taught by Antonia Boyle, and classes on Wednesdays are taught by Meg van Hale.
