Materials Introduction


This is an introduction to the materials and how to use them. The material list is small, but we will learn how to use each item to its full potential.

10:30 AM - 11:30 AM

Envelope


Here we will learn to see the shape (envelope) around the figure. Learning this skill will help us to see light and shadow shapes which will inform the placement of features moving forward.

11:30 AM - 12:30 PM

Light and Dark


This will include a short demonstration explaining the fall of light and how to read/translate it to drawing.

12:30 PM - 1:00 PM

Lunch Break


There will be coffee/tea and biscuits provided but please bring a water bottle to stay hydrated and your lunch!

1:00 PM - 2:00 PM

Pt II Light and Dark


We will continue to render our drawing. Each student will receive one-on-one help.

Introduction to Charcoal


This will be an introduction to using charcoal powder, willow charcoal and putty eraser. We will learn to draw in reverse using the principles we learnt throughout the workshop.

About this event

This intensive 6-hour workshop is designed for beginners wanting to learn the basics of figure drawing. The principles taught can be applied to portraiture. You will learn to see things as they are, not what you think they are!

Nour Hassan teaches figure drawing both nationally and internationally. She has recently taught at various locations across the Southland region, including the Southern Institute of Technology (SIT), and organized portrait drawing workshops in Kurdistan, Iraq. She recently completed a four-month art residency with the William Hodges Fellowship in Invercargill. Hassan exhibits as a solo artist and as part of an international collective. She holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts and is currently pursuing a Master of Arts in History.

The class will require you to bring the following materials so you can continue to practice well after the workshop!

Material List

  • 1x Blackwing pearl pencil (white)
  • 1x Sharpener (option 1. preferably Blackwing Sharpener, option 2. Craft knife and Sandpaper pencil pad) option 3. Standard sharpener)- Willow charcoal
  • 1x General's Charcoal pencil or similar
  • Soft kneadable Putty eraser
  • 1x small and 1x large paper stumps
  • A3 Drawing paper pad (smooth finish)

I am a total beginner in drawing, will this class suit me?

Yes! certainly, this is a good place to start.

6 hours is a long time. Will I be able to take small breaks throughout?

Yes! There will be tea and coffee available any time you need a little break. It is advisable to step away from your work regularly and return to it with fresh eyes. This will allow you to see mistakes you didn't notice before.

Do I need to bring my lunch?

Yes, please bring your lunch. There will be tea/coffee and biscuits available during the workshop.

You mention using charcoal powder and willow charcoal, will they be provided?

Yes, these material will be provided for you.
